- 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 cup green olives, pitted and chopped
- 1 cup black olives, pitted and chopped
- 1/2 cup pickled vegetables (like giardiniera), chopped
- 1/2 pound mortadella, sliced
- 1/2 pound salami, sliced
- 1/2 pound ham, sliced
- 1/2 pound provolone cheese, sliced
- 1/2 pound mozzarella cheese, sliced
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, combine the chopped green olives, black olives, and pickled vegetables.
- In a separate small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, red wine vinegar, dried oregano, garlic powder, and crushed red pepper flakes (if using).
- Pour the dressing over the olive mixture and stir well to combine. Make sure all the ingredients are evenly coated.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
- Take your large round loaf of Italian or muffuletta bread and place it on a cutting board.
- Using a serrated knife, carefully slice the bread in half horizontally, keeping the top and bottom intact.
- Optionally, scoop out some of the soft bread from the inside to create more space for the fillings.
- Spread a generous amount of the olive salad on the bottom half of the bread.
- Layer the sliced mortadella, salami, ham, provolone cheese, and mozzarella cheese on top.
- Add another layer of the olive salad on top of the cheese.
- Place the top half of the bread on the sandwich and press down gently.
- Wrap the assembled sandwich tightly in plastic wrap or parchment paper.
- Place a heavy skillet or cast-iron pan on top of the wrapped sandwich.
- Let the sandwich sit for at least 1 hour at room temperature, or refrigerate for a few hours or overnight.
- Remove the sandwich from the wrap and place it on a cutting board.
- Using a sharp serrated knife, slice the sandwich into wedges or halves.
Notes
- For best results, allow the sandwich to sit overnight in the refrigerator to enhance the flavors.
- Feel free to customize the meats and cheeses based on your preferences.
