Ingredients
Scale
- 4 ripe bananas, peeled and sliced lengthwise
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup banana liqueur (such as Bols or DeKuyper)
- 1/4 cup dark rum
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Vanilla ice cream, for serving
- Chopped pecans or walnuts, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat, being careful not to let it burn.
- Add the packed brown sugar and ground cinnamon, stirring continuously until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is smooth (about 2-3 minutes).
- Pour in the banana liqueur and stir to combine. Let it simmer for about 1 minute.
- Add the dark rum, stirring well. Be cautious as the rum can ignite if the heat is too high. Simmer for another minute.
- Stir in the vanilla extract, then remove the skillet from heat and set aside.
- Peel the ripe bananas and slice them lengthwise into halves (or quarters if preferred).
- Gently place the bananas into the skillet with the sauce, ensuring they are well coated.
- Return the skillet to medium heat and cook the bananas for about 2-3 minutes, stirring gently to coat evenly.
- Carefully tilt the skillet away from you and ignite the rum with a long lighter or match. Watch the flames rise for a beautiful presentation.
- Let the flames burn for about 30 seconds to cook off the alcohol.
- Once the flames die down, stir the bananas in the sauce to ensure they are well coated.
- Place a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream in a serving bowl or plate.
- Spoon the warm banana mixture over the ice cream, drizzling some sauce on top.
- Optionally, sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts for added crunch.
- Serve immediately while the bananas are warm and the ice cream is cold. Enjoy!
Notes
- Use ripe bananas for the best flavor; look for bananas with a few brown spots.
- Be cautious when flambéing; ensure there are no flammable items nearby.
- Feel free to adjust the amount of rum and liqueur to your taste preference.
